Cellist Erik Friedlander is known for his stylistic versatility. His compositions include abstract contemporary elements as well as vestiges of Eastern European klezmer and American folk music. His compositions for the trio “Claws and Wings” are highly autobiographical. Written after the death of Friedlander’s wife Lynn Shapiro, they are tales of loss, grief and the refusal to come to terms with finality. Together with pianist Sylvie Courvoisier and electronic musician Ikue Mori, Friedlander creates an emotionally nuanced, dream-like and somewhat surreal atmosphere on stage, unique in its disturbing and brittle beauty.
